Chapter Nine

Patricia craned around and slung her arm over the front seat while Jenny drove the three of us back to town. “So? What did you find on the car? You said it didn’t have a computer problem.”

“Those Forensics people really need to get their performance evaluated,” I remarked. “They didn’t do a very thorough search on that car.”

“What do you mean?”

“No one tampered with the car’s computer because it doesn’t have a computer. The car is too old. I figured that out as soon as I saw it.”

“How did they make the car break down, then?” Jenny called over her shoulder. “How did they make it stop right there on that particular curve?”

“They punctured the fuel line—and they left a perfect fingerprint right next to the spot where they did it. Anyone could see it just by looking at it—no magnifying glass required.”

Jenny almost drove off the road spinning around to stare at me. “Are you sure?”

“Absolutely sure. All we have to do is get the line fingerprinted and we’ll have the attacker in our sights.”

“How do we get it fingerprinted?” Patricia asked. “We would have to convince Detective Abbott to come out and go over the car again.”

“We don’t have to. I pulled the line myself.” I drew out the section of fuel line that I removed from Sophie’s car. I held it up wrapped in a plastic bag I found on the ground in the garage.

Patricia gaped at it with huge eyes. “You didn’t.”

“I did.” I put it back into my pocket. “Drive to the morgue and we’ll get Jamie to do it for us.”

“That makes no sense,” Jenny countered. “Wouldn’t the Forensics team notice that the car was out of gas? I would have expected that to be the first thing they checked.”

“They would have, and they would have found out, just like I did, that the car still had a full tank of gas.”

“But how?” Patricia asked. “A punctured fuel line would have drained the tank. The car would stop there because it would be out of gas.”

“The car has a backup fuel tank,” I told her. “They didn’t come standard with those cars, so Sophie must have installed it herself—which explains why the attacker didn’t know about it. That’s another reason to think the attacker was no automotive expert. They knew enough to puncture the fuel line but not enough to notice a spare tank when they were under the car doing it. I’m guessing no one knew the car had a spare tank except Sophie herself and probably Eeps.”

“You’re not saying Eeps killed her!” Patricia gasped.

“Of course not, dimwit,” Jenny countered. “If he knew about the spare tank, he would have punctured that, too. He wouldn’t have left the second tank full for her to drive away from the scene.” She scowled at me in the rearview mirror. “The second tank is full, isn’t it? Please tell me it’s still full.”

“It is. That’s why the Forensics team didn’t realize the car ran out of gas.
